“Culture of” is an event series held by the start-up, STRTGST. Each month they feature different speakers who cover a set theme trending in today’s culture. I was fortunate enough to work on Culture of: Chill, exploring everything from mindfulness to cannabis and learning about why people would rather stay in than go out these days. Talks were led by the founder of HoneyPot Supply, Buffy and Folk Rebellion and took place at The New Work Project in May 2018.
My task was to create a key visual which would serve as the branding for this event.
From the get-go I wanted to do something illustration-based. I don’t typically get the chance to integrate illustration much into my work, and when this client gave me full creative freedom I jumped at the chance. It was so fun getting to blend such a great theme into a piece of art that felt not just culturally relevant, but so custom and in line with my own personal style.
Choosing the hair style, adding piercings and tattoos and playing with how bold color, shapes and negative space could work to frame type all made this such a fun, quick little project. I’m really hoping to do more of this in my future work.
